Name derivation
The partition modifier distinguishes these cells from the canonical CA3 Pyramidal cells. Umbrella distinguishes the dendrites that reach outside of CA3c into CA3b SLM. CA3 distinguishes these cells from pyramidal cells in other subregions.

"FIG. 3. Camera lucida drawings of a CA3c pyramidal cell {CA3c Umbrella Pyramidal*} showing dendritic extent (A) and axonal projections (B). A: soma gives rise to basal dendrites that extend slightly into the hilus (H) and apical dendrites that extend into stratum radiatum and stratum moleculare of the CA3 field. Note the long apical dendrites (arrow) that bend as if to avoid entering the hilus and the granule cell layer (GL). B: axon collaterals project into the hilus and across the CA3c pyramidal cell layer and into the CA1 field (Schaffer collaterals, arrows). The primary axon projects toward the fimbria (*). ML, molecular layer of the dentate gyrus. Calibration bars: 100 [micro]m."

Notes: The canonical is not a CA3c PC, which the current cell is. The canonical CA3c cell does not have dendrites in CA3:SLM, which the current cell does. The other two CA3c cells do not project into CA2 and CA1, which the current cell does.

OK, but I think there's enough evidence of a subset of canonical CA3c PC that push dendrites in SLM ("umbrella" pyramids). Ishizuka + Amaral in their 1995 DENDRITE paper show some. So this could/should become ACTIVE. cf cell C12877 in NMO also C12873, C11471 and others C80764 C53063 + C60463 - GAA 03/01/2018

Notes: The canonical CA3 pyramidal cell is not found in CA3c, which the current is. Two of the CA3c cells project into CA2 and CA1, which the current cell does not. The last CA3c cell projects dendrites into DG:H, whereas the current cell projects axons into DG:H.

I think that the axon is incomplete and this is a classic CA3c PC.

Notes: The canonical cells are not found in CA3c, which the current cell is. Two of the other CA3c cells project into CA2 and CA1, which the current cell does not. The remaining CA3c cell projects axons into DG:H, whereas the current cell projects dendrites into DG:H.

Not totally convinced. The axon is clearly incomplete, and the dendrites do not necessarily enter the hilus. I think this is a classic CA3c PC and would add to that packet. "the current cell does not" -> unless they say so explicitly in paper. - GAA 03/01/2018

Notes: This packet is a proposed merger of 3 unapproved v2.0 on-hold cells. The canonical PC is not a CA3c PC, which the current cells are. The canonical CA3c cell does not have dendrites in CA3:SLM, which the current cells do.
